Borgue, Dumfries & Galloway
Castle Haven is not a medieval castle, but an Iron Age dun: a defended coastal homestead where thick stone walls, cliffs, and sea created natural protection for families inside.
Its most unusual feature is galleried walling: narrow passages, chambers, and stairways built inside the wall, linking Castle Haven to Atlantic building traditions further west across western Scotland and islands.
The site was cleared and partly rebuilt in 1905 by James Brown of Knockbrex, making it easier to read but not entirely original above foundation level in its upper stonework.
